Molder of young pitchers
Our championship hopes lie in the hands of a man who wears a long-sleeve jacket throughout the heat of the Flushing summer.
Outside of Jose Reyes -- whose talents are utterly irreplaceable to our offense -- I think pitching coach Rick Peterson is the most important member of the Mets this season.
The team announced yesterday that he's been given a three-year extension, a well-deserved move since he just coaxed a solid season out of a starting rotation full of aging junk-ballers.
But after just missing the World Series last season, the stakes will be higher come April.
Rick is going to have to mold some combination of John Maine, Oliver Perez, Mike Pelfrey, Philip Humber and Jason Vargas into the next Mulder/Hudson/Zito.
He's got a few fastballs to work with there, that's for sure. But he's going to have to use a bit of magic improving some shaky breaking balls.

What would Saturday morning be without a cartoon? Have you heard animated alum Jose Lima (0-4 as a Met last season, with a 9.87 ERA and one grand slam to an opposing pitcher) wants to make a comeback? Seems he can't understand why he hasn't gotten an invite to a camp.

12 days 'til pitchers and catchers.

Mets in '07!

I think right now Mexico May be a better option than the Major Leagues for Jose Lima at this state in his career:)

Hahaha, looks like some poor town in Mexico is going to become the next victim of "Lima Time."

I am laughing too - how Lima ever earned the right to throw even one pitch in the Majors last year was beyond me. Especially when he showed up with that yellow hair. You laugh more when you see him starting on the mound and gems like Heilman sit in the pen.
Silly question - why is Petersons nickname "the jacket"?
Aldo, does nayone know what if any plans are in store for Soler? I did not think he was unsalvagable.
Spring training is right around the corner and I cannot wait!

Can you guys believe Lima actually went 16-8 in 1998 and 21-10 in 1999?? lol How the mighty have fallen!
Lee Ellen... I get the feeling if Soler gets another chance, he's really going to have to earn it with a solid showing in Triple A.
He showed up to spring training overweight last season and the team blames that for his slow start. After he got shelled by the Red Sox and Yankees in back-to-back starts, it turned out he was hiding a calf-injury... an injury officials were not happy he kept quiet and something they probably blamed on his lousy conditioning. He never got another chance last season.
With the three, four and five spots open this spring, anything can happen. But Alay will have to pitch himself into serious contention.
As for Peterson, he's got a few quirky habits... lol One of them is wearing that long-sleeve jacket in the dugout just about every day of the season... no matter how hot it is. I'm sure that's how he got the nickname lol.
Enjoy the Super Bowl today guys!

Thanks for the Peterson info :) Pretty funny about the jacket.
Yes, Soler had moments but for some reason I liken him alot to Ollie Perez. Young, throws bullets but a little wild here and there. I think Soler could come around though.
Yes, going to watch the Super Bowl today too. Kind of fun now that the Jets are out of it as it is not so improtant who wins.
Enjoy the ame.

When Soler is at his best, he pounds the strike zone with his array of sliders.
It's when he gets too cute and constantly tries to get batters to chase out of the zone that he gets into trouble.
And dropping a few pounds wouldn't hurt either lol.
Either way, Alay will get his shot at the Amazin' Arms Race this spring.
