The fight for right

It's starting to become clear that Ben Johnson doesn't belong in Triple-A.
Johnson      And now I'm wondering whether we'd be doing ourselves an injustice relegating him to the bench in Flushing as well.
As nice a story as the revival of Lastings Milledge has been this spring, it's been Johnson -- three more hits and another HR yesterday -- who is providing the fiercest challenge to incumbent rightfielder Shawn Green.
When we got him from San Diego, the book on Johnson -- a big-time minor league hitter -- was that he needed at-bats to establish himself as a big leaguer. For what it's worth, he's smoking at the plate so far this spring.
With three weeks of camp left to go, Johnson is hitting .409, Milledge .300 and Green .160.
This job is up for grabs.
Who would you like to see playing everyday in right field when we break camp?
---
Oliver Perez had another solid outing yesterday, giving up just a run in 4 IP to the Nationals. Alay Soler gave up 4 runs and 4 walks in an inning of work.

Enjoy your Sunday and Mets in '07!

.160 for Green?! I don't know what happened to that guy, but he's done.

Shawn Green is a notoriously slow starter. Not only the bad spring trainings but the first few weeks of the season as well. The question is will he really find his power again, at least to bat .300 and hit 30 HRs? And find it by the end of ST? (I guess that's really two questions).

If not, the Mets might be better off trading Green to a team that can use his "veteran presence" and platooning Milledge and Johnson in right, with Milledge playing some left to spell Alou, and Johnson in center occasionally giving Beltran the day off.

I agree that shawn Green does have slow starts to the season and in Spring Training But the problrm is that Lastings Milledge plays his position to and if you got a guy batting .300 VS .160 which are you gunna take to start? The .300 hitter right?.At least I would and I am sure willie would too. This SOX-orioles game is the slowest spring training game I have watched yet probably cause Steve Trachsel is pitching for the O's.

Green just struck out with 2 on. I've had it with this guy. I'd have Johnson and Milledge start the season. I'd have to cut Green, I know they won't but I've haad my fill of this guy. He's had it.

Yvaithe-I agree he has had his chance to so them what he has got and obviously hasnt bench him at least for the begining of the season.Until he proves he can step it up or Lastings Milledge proves he cant which, with the sppring he has had I dont see that happening for a while:)

Bye, Shawn. Don't let the door hit you on the way out.

It's still early in spring, and not entirely fair to assess Green at this point, but there's a 90% chance he's done...I'm willing to take the risk of trading or even releasing him outright to avoid Milledge/Johnson languishing in Triple-A when they have nothing more to prove there.

If worse comes to worst and both Milledge and Johnson stink, Endy Chavez can fill in capably for a time, and we can trade for someone else... Shawn Greens are a dime a dozen.

Eep...missed the games this weekend, but sorry to hear those numbers on Soler.

Zach... I'm not exactly sure what happened either. Shawn's still a fairly young guy and his drop-off has been dramatic. He just fell off the face of the earth.

Kellia... I didn't know that about Green. If he needs until May to get going, I'm not sure he's going to survive that this season. Not with Milledge and Johnson pushing him.

Kaylee... think Green can come off the bench if push came to shove? We need a decent backup for Carlos Delgado and Julio Franco doesn't do much for me. If it turns out Shawn loses his everyday rightfield gig, he could really provide some depth to the team. (PS I don't envy you for having to sit through a Steve Trachsel game! lol)

YVaith... yeh, this spring has not been a good one for Shawn. I am starting to get exciting watching Milledge and Johnson play, though. Does green on the bench do anything for you?

EC... Soler came back down to earth yesterday. Still, he showed up to camp in shape and likely re-established himself as an option in the eyes of management if the need a starter during the season.

He can come off the Bench He may not like it but,he will grudgly do it.He might be able to play center as a backup he did it with the Diamondbacks! He also played first with us.So yeah he can provide depth for them as a backup

Yeah I am not sure the 49 year old horse has me convinced as a backup to carlos Delgado either.

You guys are way too cruel. I've been the first one to step up and put Milledge in as a starter somewhere, but to wait until he has a bad ST showing to curse him is wrong. In my opinion, ST is not a time to decide whether or not these guys are good as starters. I say (if you really have to), give Green a month and let Milledge rip up AAA. If Green is not up to .275, we can deal with him.

I had more to say...but the NCAA selection show is on now!

I think you all are jumping the gun regarding Green. Willie loves his veterans, almost to a fault, so I have no doubt that Green will be starting RF come April. He looks pretty anemic out there though and hopefully Willie will not wait till August to bump him if he is having problems.

I felt bad about Soler's outing the othe day. I am really rooting he settles in again and makes a great showing next time out. Loving Ollie Perez and Maine's performances so far. Today Glavine actually looked pretty good but our fielding was atrocious.

But typical Met style, we scored enough runs after being behind to tie the second game today so I am still staying positive for our 2007 Mets.

Lee Ellen

lee ellen-I didnt mean to be negative about GREEN I am just saying lastings milledge is gunna pretty upset if he is batting .300 goin into spring and GREEN is batting .160 and gets to start.SO HOPEFULLY GREEN picks it up a bit:)

I meant going into the season.

Afterall,I would never send SHAWN OUT THE DOOR he is my man:)
