Some credit Omar's way
Omar is getting some props for one of his signings.
According to ESPN.com’s Sean McAdam, the one-year, $8.5M contract our GM worked out with leftfielder Moises Alou is one of the best of the winter.
Said McAdam of Alou: "He doesn't have to be the Mets' big bat — Carlos Delgado, Carlos Beltran, David Wright and Jose Reyes make up the meat of the order — but if he gives them 130 or so games in left field, he'll make their batting order that much deeper."
The guy’s right.
Sure Alou is old and injury prone, but really he’s a nice for us.
He can still hit... especially against lefties.
And he keeps the position warm until some of our kids are ready to nail the job down next season.

Mets in '07

You seem to be a little harsh on Omar. Before he came here we were a joke. No one wanted to play for the Mets. Within two years Omar had us one win away from the series. I mean the man signed Beltran, Pedro and Wagner. He dealt for Delgado and Lo Duca. The man has changed the face of the Mets from utter joke to a force in the NL. He didn't land Zito, did you want to be on the hook for 7 years at $18 mill a pop? So he didn't trade the future for a so-so pitcher, I think Omar deserves some slack because if we still had Duqette (sp?) I'm sure we'd still be in last place and would have traded Wright and Reyes by now.

Actually, I think Eddie was complimenting Omar. And I agree, Omar did pretty good this winter and without emptying "the bank". I was probably initially more harsh on Omar than Eddie ever was but I have come to see the light :)
Anyway, Let's go Mets.

Hey EC... that was meant to be complimentary of the big guy! lol I'm definitely down w/ the Alou signing. He kills lefties, makes us more balanced, and with so many good young outfield prospects, his is a one-year deal as to not curtail their growth if they are ready next season.
I love the Ben Johnson move (Bell and Ring were given numerous shots to win a job here and failed) and I think Bannister for Burgos is a steal. With all the young, hardthrowers we have coming up, we didn't need a guy like Bannister... someone w/ no out pitch. Burgos is real young, brings big-time heat and had some success two years ago. A guy like that may just need cleaner mechanics.
Does the pitching staff have the potential to be thin? Yes. But considering what Zito got, and considering what else was out there, I couldn't bare to see Tomo Ohka take innings away from Mike Pelfrey. So Omar will give the kids a shot, and if they fall on their faces and we start taking on water, we can always do a prospect-for-veteran deal in May or June.
All things considered, I'm starting to think O did OK this winter.
Lee Ellen... I had pretty high hopes this winter of that one big signing to put us over the top myself. But contracts got REALLY out of hand for marginal talent and we stayed on the sidelines. When Omar got here he told us he wanted to build from within. This season he held true to that. That's cool with me.
